Although there are many large and small islands in the Lomaiviti group, tourism is not overdeveloped in this region. The main centre is Ovalau, which has a variety of accommodation options. A number of good tours are also available.
What to see and do...
Of particular importance is the picturesque and historical town of Levuka on the eastern coastline of Ovalau. In the days of early colonial settlement in Fiji, Levuka was once the capital. When the capital was shifted to Suva, Levuka was captured in time, and its heritage is preserved to this day. The town is rich in colonial buildings, and there are many historical buildings to see in this unique town.
Accommodation ranges from small resorts to more modest bed and breakfast lodging, providing a base from which to explore the island. There is a good scenic coastal road and bus service, while cars and bikes are also available for hire. There are a few beaches, but the better beaches may be found on neighbouring small islands such as Leleuvia and Caqalai, although the accommodation on these islands is more basic. There are some great hiking trails on Ovalau, particularly to the central volcanic crater, the village of Lovoni, and several popular waterfalls.
Other islands in the group include Naigani Island and Wakaya Island to the north and east. Both islands have resorts with private golf courses, the Wakaya Club being one of the most exclusive in Fiji.
Closer to the main island of Viti Levu is Toberua island, which has a small resort. It has its own dive operation, and other activities include snorkelling, birdwatching trips, sailing and fishing. It also has barefoot golf - low tide only!
Other islands in the Lomaiviti group include Gau and Koro in the east. Accommodation is not as plentiful as in other parts of Fiji, but on the plus side if you are looking for something more out of the way, there are fewer tourists here. As always, you will find the local Fijian people friendly and helpful.
Getting There
There are regular scheduled flights to Ovalau from Suva's Nausori airport. The Ovalau airstrip is on the west of the island, and there is a pleasant coastal road round to Levuka on the east coast. A bus service is available.
From Nausori, one may also get to some of the other islands, such as Koro and Gau. Wakaya Club has its own private air transport for its guests.
Boat transport is also available.
