Fiji Islands Surfing

Come to Fiji for some of the best breaks in the Pacific

Most of the well known breaks are on or near the large island of Viti Levu, for example Cloudbreak, Wilkes, & Namotu in the Mamanuca Group. These are famous as being the most challenging surfing breaks in the South Pacific, and suitable for the more experienced surfer. Desperation and Swimming Pools are two other breaks in this area.

Apart from the Mamanuca breaks, you can travel to the more isolated Frigates Pass (five miles out to sea close to Beqa Island) or to the breaks off Kadavu (Nagigia).

No matter which spot you choose, surfing in Fiji is a truly remarkable adventure.

Nagigia Island - Surf Fiji left and right handers depending upon the wind, tide and swell direction. The prevailing winds are offshore for the King Kong left. The average size is 2' to 5' offshore. This break has a very deep water take-off, reducing risk of coral scratchs and making the break a fun ride. There are several other surf breaks to choose from.

Frigates Pass - The waves are right-handers. The sand is clean. The water is clean. Uncrowded surfing.

Beach breaks can be found on the south coast of Viti Levu (the main island). Sigatoka is quite good, though be cautious of the undercurrents there. Natadola Beach is good for body surfing and there are a few breaks off Suva, the capital of Fiji.

If you are bringing surfboards with you, you may need to check for luggage allowances, especially on the smaller aircraft within Fiji. Check out the Air Travel page.
